European Musical Diversity: the EU-CODE Residency for Composers

The “European Musical Diversity” co-creation residency in Budapest stands as a core initiative within the transnational EU-CODE project. Hosted at the historic Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, this intensive program brings together selected composers from Italy, Spain, and Hungary. The primary objective of the residency is collaborative composition and technical development, focusing directly on establishing a new, dedicated repertoire for wind orchestras.

The core itinerary of the residency consists of technical workshops and peer-led composition labs. Rather than working in isolation, the participating Italian, Spanish, and Hungarian composers engage in extensive co-creation sessions. This collaborative approach allows them to blend different regional traditions and academic training into unified musical structures designed specifically for wind ensembles.

Instruction and workshop facilitation are led by an international panel of established composers and educators, who introduce specialized techniques to help shape the upcoming repertoire.

Complementing the academic work at the Liszt Academy, the residency integrates specific cultural site visits to contextualize the local heritage of the host nation. Participants connect with the local community through events such as an open-air folk music concert and traditional Dance House at the House of Music, alongside cultural activities during the Night of Museums.

The Budapest residency represents a key step in the continuous journey of the EU-CODE project. The overall project roadmap includes the realization of further workshops and seminars—such as upcoming activities in Madrid—and extensive preparation for the inaugural official Festival, where the wind orchestra pieces co-created during the residency program will be publicly performed.
